Whispering circuit 011:  The USB 

Chen pulled out the last piece of evidence – the corrupted USB drive. His gut told him this small object held big secrets.

Chen pushed the USB across the table to the Echo. “This was in Synesthesia’s studio,” he said. “It’s damaged. But if you can access what’s left, it might help us understand who is behind this and why you were at those crime scenes.”

The Echo scanned the drive, her eyes glowing brighter for a moment. “I am accessing the data. Some data fragments on the drive slot into some of my missing data.”

Seconds stretched into minutes as the synth’s eyes glowed. 

Finally, the Echo spoke, “I have synthesized the USB data fragments and mine. The USB contains partial logs and communications. It appears the tech CEO Jason Stone was planning to take control of the mystery company. He was not just a private investor. He was becoming a threat.”

Chen added, “Yes, we believe he was planning a hostile takeover of the mystery company.”

Chen leaned forward. “How about Synesthesia?”

“Her funding from Stone was substantial,” Echo continued. “But she was uncomfortable, even frightened, with the direction their research was taking.”

“So, what was the research?” Chen asked.

The Echo apologized. “I’m sorry. There is no information about this on the USB.” 

Chen looked at his notes, and then looked up at the Echo. “The artist’s partner told me that Synesthesia talked to you about her work. Can you remember anything?”

The ECHO replied. “No. My memory of our recent conversations has been wiped clean.”

Chen continued, “Her body was found over a digital canvas. Her partner said she was frantically working on it before she was killed. But I noticed in one corner of the canvas there was unfinished code. If you scan it, do you think you could figure out what she was working on?”

“I don’t know, but I can try”, the Echo offered. 

Chen stood up. He knew what they had to do. But Lin despises synths and would not trust this “killer” synth to leave the police station.

“Look,” Chen started to explain to the Echo. “My boss distrusts you and AI technology. She has scheduled your termination after our interrogation. She wants to destroy you and scrub your system for any useful data.”

“We need to escape,” Chen said.
