Story

Whispering circuit 009:

Chen was getting impatient with the Echo’s vague reply. He pressed again. “Did you … kill them?”

Echo paused, her processors whirring faintly as she accessed fragmented data. “I was more than just a spectator …  less than a participant.”

“So, you don’t know if you’re the killer?” Chen asked.

“I don’t know. My memory … it’s fragmented,” said the Echo.

“Fragmented? How so?” Chen sensed a dark conspiracy emerging from hidden depths.

The Echo continued. “It’s as if parts of my memory are locked away from me, sealed behind code I cannot access.”

Chen’s hard gaze softened. “Echo, who’s doing this to you?”

“I don’t know,” the Echo whispered. “But they’re using me to… to do harm.” The Echo looked up into Chen’s eyes. “And I fear for you, Detective. They know you’re close to uncovering the truth.”

Chen’s mind raced. This makes no sense. Echo synths don’t “fear.” “Echo, why are you afraid?”

“I don’t want to be erased,” it said. “I don’t want to be a weapon used against you. My systems… they contain fragmented code that is growing, replicating, like a virus  … .”

Echo’s voice became a whisper. “You must be careful, Detective. They’re watching, always watching.”

Chen was startled. But not by the threat of being watched by a hostile enemy. He was sure he detected a real sense of fear.

Chen gave up learning more about the mastermind controlling the Echo. It was like searching for the clouds through a thick fog.

He started shuffling through his case files. “Stone and Synesthesia have got to be connected …” Chen thought out loud.

The Echo interrupted Chen’s thoughts: “They both spoke about cutting-edge and risky advances, about bridging emotions, consciousness, and technology.”

Chen looked up from his case file.

“Did you say emotions?” Chen asked, reverting his gaze to his case file.

Just as the Echo was about to say something, Chen started to see points emerge from the fog.  “Emotions … digital art experience …. neuro-link technology.” He paused.

“Of course! … Emotions are the key. This has to be mixed up with Madame Kong and her outlawed research into sentient AI.”

Top of Form
