Story
Whispering circuit 004: Homicide 2 – Forgotten in the shadows
Taking a bite of piece of fried chicken, detective Chen called up the file on the second homicide. Madame Kong – prototype designer of sentient AI.
Her home was in the edges of old Taipei, nested on the top floor of a grungy five-story building. No neon lights here. And no elevator.
As Chen trudged up the stairwell, he noted cracks and paint peeling on its walls. A neglected and forgotten place.
Or a place that wanted to be forgotten?
The apartment was a relic from another age. No signs of modern convenience or technology. Just a clutter of old furniture and a lifetime of mementos.
An old lady’s body was lying peacefully on the living room floor, hands folded lovingly across her chest. A faint smile on her lips.
On the coffee table was a pot of tea and one cup. Both half full.
Interrupting Chen’s meditative contemplation, Chief Lin stormed in. “What’s the angle, Chen?” she yapped, her voice breaking the silence like scraping metal.
Chen, slightly irritated, was in no hurry to reply.
“A photograph,” he finally said, pointing towards the victim’s crossed arms embracing a framed photo.
“It’s an old photo of the victim. Looks like she was celebrating a birthday with a sim.”
“Fucking sims,” Chief Lin cursed. “Good thing we purged those monsters!”
Her voice betrayed a wound that never healed.
Lin also had things she wanted forgotten. Chen recalled how Lin’s husband left her for a “sim” just months before the purge.
Lin’s facade immediately changed from disgust to shock. “That’s Madame Kong! I thought she was killed during the sentient AI purge.”
Chen studied the photo. Kong and the sim looked really happy. He had almost forgotten what sentient AIs looked like.
Both Lin and Chen continued to look at the photo until Lin broke the silence. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this, Chen,” she murmured.
Chen closed the murder file and pushed the last piece of chicken in his mouth.
Madame Kong was celebrated as the mother of sentient AI, until the Human First movement put a bounty on her head. Is she connected to the first victim, Stone? Is the Echo android involved somehow?
He washed down the fried chicken with Taiwan draft beer and pulled up the case file for the third homicide, just 2 days after Madame Kong.
